It was published in1989. Its subtitle is "Thought Control in Democratic Societies." Here is a paragraph from page 10.
"Case by case, we find that conformity is the easy way, and the path to privilege and prestige; dissidence carries personal costs that may be severe, even in a society that lacks such means of control as death squads, psychiatric prisons, or extermination camps. The very structure of the media is designed to induce conformity to established doctrine. In a 3 minute stretch between commercials, or in 700 words, it is impossible to present unfamiliar thoughts or surprising conclusions with the argument and evidence required to afford them some credibility. Regurgitation of welcome pieties faces no such problem."
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09998558071715363472noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400574.post-92150357717255522892014-08-12T20:55:10.130-07:002014-08-12T20:55:10.130-07:00I'm reminded of that Jackson Browne song "...I'm reminded of that Jackson Browne song "Running on Empty" because that is really where the local MSM is right now. "Top Dog 98" is down the gutter, the Sun and Province are desperate with diminishing takers and the old BCTV (now called Global better known as Glowball) are all stand up commedians for the BC Lieberals. If I could possibily tell the CRTC that I would rather pick my stations, I would only be paying for CBC, Knowledge, PBC (US) and OASIS, Smithsonian, etc. as well as my husband's sports stations (except that TSN and Rogers only want Toronto based sports teams to be promoted. I can tell you that I'm just about finished with 90% of what is offered as 'entertainment US style'. Thank whoever, that I see no need to have a cell phone.Lulymaynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400574.post-68927195062533786872014-08-09T09:16:06.730-07:002014-08-09T09:16:06.730-07:00I think people are already tuning out. The Blogosphere, main beneficiary of the migration, has been criticized on veracity, but, by "sponsoring" the news---or whatever you wanna call it---MSM can't really compete on that level, either.

So, advertisers got newspapers over a barrel, eh? Taking advantage of the situation to dupe readers with advertisement disguised as news, eh? If this is one of the reasons why people are tuning newspapers out, to whom are advertisers aiming their schlock? It's one thing to dupe a captive audience, quite another when that audience can---and does--get up and leave.

Resorting to infomercials looks a lot like a petard thing.scotty on denmannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400574.post-44042164438524421982014-08-08T13:18:27.852-07:002014-08-08T13:18:27.852-07:00I think everyone needs to be transparent and hones...I think everyone needs to be transparent and honest, but don't expect that to happen. CFAX radio here in Victoria has sold hour-long blocks of time to people peddling investments which sound entirely as if they were real programming directed at meeting listeners' needs. People were fooled, and lost money.
Serious information consumers can likely sort it all out, but many people are going to be fooled by advertising masquerading as news or entertainment.
And more people will likely give up and tune much of it out.paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11003637352818760817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400574.post-14535675737613352042014-08-07T18:30:48.984-07:002014-08-07T18:30:48.984-07:00Thanks Paul--

I don't think that reflected advertiser influence. The story was complex and unfolded slowly and the newsrooms simply lacked the competence and awareness to report on it. And the first wave of victims tended to try and hide the problems, fearing their condos would be unsaleable.
paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11003637352818760817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1400574.post-83401772253637576552014-08-07T16:18:33.262-07:002014-08-07T16:18:33.262-07:00Thanks for this.
